Our Statement on Grant’s Pass

On Friday, June 28th, the most reactionary and right wing Supreme Court in modern history rolled back civil rights protections for hundreds of thousands of unhoused people nationwide by overturning a key decision in Grants Pass v. Johnson. This ruling, supported and celebrated by London Breed and every other single major candidate running for the San Francisco mayorship, empowers cities to criminalize sleeping in public — whether or not appropriate accommodations are available.

A city-sanctioned war against unhoused San Franciscans is nothing new, but this ruling greenlights an escalation in cruelty. In the court’s decision, Justice Neal Gorsuch referenced an amicus brief, written by San Francisco City Attorney David Chiu and backed by London Breed, no less than 8 times. When asked about post-Grants Pass sweeps targeting encampments, London Breed has publicly refused to rule out arrests as an official ‘solution’ to our City’s housing unaffordability crisis. DSA SF rejects this wholeheartedly.

London Breed, as well as the broader coalition of “moderates,” represent a failure of leadership. Our City’s politicians have rallied around the notion that “compassion is killing people.” Yet, they have grossly mismanaged solutions and ignored the long term work needed to create systemic fixes for our linked crises of housing, homelessness, and public health.1 Including, but not at all limited to, Breed’s refusal to release the money from Prop I meant for public social housing.

Research and anecdotal evidence alike confirm that sweeps literally kill people.2 In supporting the Grants Pass decision, our City’s leadership demonstrates their allegiance to protecting the needs of capital and the private real estate market at the expense of human lives. DSA SF rejects, in totality, the criminalization and ongoing dehumanization of poor, disabled, and working class people who have been forced into homelessness by the capitalist economic system.

As Socialists, we assert that everyone has a right to live in our city, not just the wealthy and their acolytes. Breed and Co. want to ignore the path to real change: practical solutions that will get our people off the street and into the care and adequate housing they need to thrive. Violent crackdowns only worsen the crisis, and empower our government to ignore the root causes of poverty, as well as hide their own complicity.

A better world, and a better San Francisco, are possible. We must continue to fight for safe and accessible housing for all working class, poor, and disabled people. DSA SF calls on all San Franciscans to defend and to practice solidarity with our neighbors who have been forced into homelessness by our rotten economic system.

Extreme Dean Door-Knocking Mobilization This Pride Sunday!

Join us this Sunday, June 30th for a door-knocking mobilization in Alamo Square park at 10:00 a.m. Every year, corporate Pride on Sunday is lame. This year, it’s more than just lame—it’s BOYCOTTED by queer and Palestinian community organizers because of its corporate and Zionist sponsors. So instead of going to the parade, we’re holding a mobilization to tell renters in District 5 about all the amazing tenant protections Dean and the DSA have fought so hard to win. And, if you’re trying to catch Dean at Pride events this weekend, you can join him on Thursday (6/27) from 5:00 p.m. – 7 p.m. at the 2024 Annual Trans March in San Francisco at Dolores Park!

Chapter Movie Night: Spaces of Exception

The DSA SF Palestine Solidarity and Anti-Imperialist Working Group is hosting a film screening of Spaces of Exception on Friday, July 12th at 7:30 p.m. Spaces of Exception is an American Indian- and Palestinian-focused documentary that investigates and juxtaposes the struggles, communities, and spaces of the American Indian reservation and the Palestinian refugee camp. We’d love it if you could make it!

The screening will be hosted at the DSA SF office at 1916 McAllister St. This is a sober event and masks are required, except when eating or drinking. There is a $10 recommended donation at the door which will go directly to the filmmakers. Nobody will be turned away for lack of funds. RSVP below. See you there!

Battle of Algiers, Friday, June 7th. Starts at 6:00 p.m., 1916 McAllister St. RSVP: DSASF.org/Algiers

Chapter Movie Night: The Battle of Algiers 🍿

On Friday, June 7, join us for a film screening of Battle of Algiers. Battle of Algiers isn’t just a re-enactment of historical events but a powerful portrayal of the struggle for independence and the resilience of the occupied fighting against the occupier. It focuses on Algerian revolutionary fighter Ali La Ponte and his fight against the French occupation forces in Algiers, the capital city of Algeria, from 1954 to 1957 during the Algerian War of Independence. This film showing is as timely as ever as the fight for liberation continues in Palestine. This film was directed by an Italian communist who led the anti-fascist resistance against Nazi Germany and also had an actual FLN leader play as one of the characters, making this one of the most classic anti-imperialist films to date.

Food and drinks will be provided. Masks are highly recommended.

Our Statement Regarding Terry Williams

Yesterday, a fire burned the Williams family home in the Alamo Square Park neighborhood – this follows a series of vile racist attacks on Terry and his family. DSA SF expresses solidarity with Terry Williams and the Williams family as they recover from the fire and targeted racist attacks. An injury to one is an injury to all.

San Francisco’s long history of vicious Anti-Black racism has displaced and driven out much of its Black community, particularly in the Western Addition. As socialists, we see the root cause in the evils of racial capitalism – a mutually reinforcing system of racialized exploitation for dividing and pitting people against each other. These forces take the form of both systemic discrimination such as redlining as well as targeted racial violence like that targeted at the Williams family.

We encourage our members as well as the general public to directly help in supporting the Williams family recover from the fire by donating to the following fundraiser and attending this Sunday’s donation drive and potluck on the 900 block of Grove street.

DSA San Francisco Stands With UAW 4811 Academic Workers

DSA San Francisco stands with UAW 4811 academic workers in their Stand Up Strike because an injury to one is an injury to all, and the unprecedented repression of pro-Palestine speech and protest happening at UCs and across the country must be defeated.

UC has failed to resolve multiple unfair labor practices against UAW 4811, such as:

  • Unjustly disciplining and retaliating against workers for exercising rights under their contract to free speech, protest, and collective action
  • Discriminating against workers engaging in pro-Palestine speech while favoring anti-Palestine speech
  • Endangering UAW 4811 members and students by allowing violent attacks by anti-Palestine agitators and police

UC must resolve these unfair labor practices by substantively engaging with the concerns raised by workers and students and negotiating in good faith. We support calls to drop all criminal charges and disciplinary actions across the UC system, as well as calls to disclose and divest.

This statement reiterates DSA San Francisco’s prior statements in solidarity with student protests, our demand for a ceasefire, and our chapter’s commitment to anti-Zionism.

If workers go on strike at UCSF, we will support the strike by joining UAW 4811 workers on the picket lines, at rallies, and campus actions.

🇵🇸 Solidarity with Pro-Palestine Student Protesters for BDS

DSA SF stands in solidarity with university student protesters across the country occupying their campuses to demand their administration divest from companies complicit in the apartheid state of Israel.

Israel and the United States continue to perpetrate genocide and enforce apartheid upon the people of Palestine. Universities that use their endowment to invest in and support military contractors and Israeli companies are also complicit.

In response to these protests, universities have called on law enforcement to begin the forcible removal and arrest of students. DSA SF strongly condemns the arrest, suspension, or expulsion of any participating students.

Universities must meet the demands of their students – fully divest from the companies profiting from genocide, apartheid, and occupation in Palestine; institute academic boycotts and sever ties with Israeli universities; and drop all charges against student activists.

Universities and police have allied to support the US’s imperialist ambitions and Zionist settler colonialism. We must all play our part in fighting for a free Palestine.

To support our local student protests, check dev.dsasf.org/events for ongoing mobilizations, and follow your local universities for turnout and donation asks!
