🇵🇸 Solidarity with Pro-Palestine Student Protesters for BDS 🍉

DSA SF stands in solidarity with university student protesters across the country occupying their campuses to demand their administration divest from companies complicit in the apartheid state of Israel.

Israel and the United States continue to perpetrate genocide and enforce apartheid upon the people of Palestine. Universities that use their endowment to invest in and support military contractors and Israeli companies are also complicit.

In response to these protests, universities have called on law enforcement to begin the forcible removal and arrest of students. DSA SF strongly condemns the arrest, suspension, or expulsion of any participating students.

Universities must meet the demands of their students – fully divest from the companies profiting from genocide, apartheid, and occupation in Palestine; institute academic boycotts and sever ties with Israeli universities; and drop all charges against student activists.

Universities and police have allied to support the US’s imperialist ambitions and Zionist settler colonialism. We must all play our part in fighting for a free Palestine.

To support our local student protests, check dev.dsasf.org/events for ongoing mobilizations, and follow your local universities for turnout and donation asks!

Chapter Movie Night: Battle of Algiers. Friday, June 7. Starts at 6:00 p.m., 1916 McAllister St. RSVP: DSASF.org/Algiers

Chapter Movie Night: The Battle of Algiers 🍿

Join us for a film screening of “The Battle of Algiers,” which isn’t just a re-enactment of historical events but a powerful portrayal of the struggle for independence and the resilience of the occupied fighting against the occupier. It focuses on Algerian revolutionary fighter Ali La Ponte and his fight against the French occupation forces in Algiers, the capital city of Algeria, from 1954 to 1957 during the Algerian War of Independence. This film showing is as timely as ever as the fight for liberation continues in Palestine. This film was directed by an Italian communist who led the anti-fascist resistance against Nazi Germany and also had an actual FLN leader play as one of the characters, making this one of the most classic anti-imperialist films to date.

Food and drinks will be provided. Masks are highly recommended.

Organizing for Power: Core Fundamentals Training Registration Closes Friday!

Registration for the Organizing for Power: Core Fundamentals training is closing  this Friday, April 26th! This training focuses on how working people can use the strength of our numbers to build majority-led disciplined structures that come together around shared goals and win campaigns in our workplace, including:

  • leader identification: understanding who can move people, and that it’s often not who you first think;
  • semantics: recognizing that the words we use matter – they must center each worker’s active participation as key to winning;
  • structured organizing conversations: preparing what it takes to win over the hardest-to-move leaders;
  • charting: incorporating a simple method to understand human social relationships, and to prioritize and systematize outreach;
  • structure tests: developing mini campaigns to build solidarity and site structure, and to know when you are ready to win.

If you’re interested in learning how to become a better organizer, register using the form below!

Rally Against Homeless Sweeps on April 22nd

Johnson.

The appellate court ruling in Grants Pass is the basis for an injunction preventing the city from conducting sweeps on SF’s homeless population without providing adequate shelter beds.

RSVP at http://www.dsasf.org/grants-pass-rally. Let’s show up and show solidarity with CoH and our unhoused neighbors!

Organizing for Power: Core Fundamentals Training Registration Closes Next Week!

Registration for the Organizing for Power: Core Fundamentals training is closing next Friday, April 26th! This training focuses on how working people can use the strength of our numbers to build majority-led disciplined structures that come together around shared goals and win campaigns in our workplace, including:

  • leader identification: understanding who can move people, and that it’s often not who you first think;
  • semantics: recognizing that the words we use matter – they must center each worker’s active participation as key to winning;
  • structured organizing conversations: preparing what it takes to win over the hardest-to-move leaders;
  • charting: incorporating a simple method to understand human social relationships, and to prioritize and systematize outreach;
  • structure tests: developing mini campaigns to build solidarity and site structure, and to know when you are ready to win.

If you’re interested in learning how to become a better organizer, register using the form below!

While our city’s rulers and the fawning media celebrated the Dot-Com Boom of the ‘90s, the reality was different for thousands of tenants who were evicted or priced out. From the dot-com party crashing at one end of the economic spectrum to painful moments with evicted families at the other, this documentary features interviews with dot-com workers, real estate developers, and San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown, as well as those who challenged the new economic order through community organizing, electoral politics, and direct action.

This event is free and open to the public, and we look forward to seeing you there!

Door Knock with the Dean Team

Join us from 10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. this Saturday, April 13th at Raymond Kimbell Playground (Steiner and Geary) and help re-elect the supervisor money can’t buy. DSA SF and Dean—along with our friends, neighbors, and coalition partners—have taken on real estate developers, landlords, and a rising conservative right in San Francisco, and won historic working-class victories that were accomplished through on-the-ground, grassroots organizing supported by a strong Socialist in office. And we know it’s working because across the country, a rising right wing backed by billionaire money has been trying to push socialist and progressive representatives like Dean out of City Hall, and we can’t let them buy this election! SHOW UP FOR THIS! We need representatives like Dean in office so he can keep fighting for the people and not the powerful.

Chapter movie night: Factory to the Workers. After ten years of operation, the workers behind the ITAS factory takeover in Ivanec, Croatia are struggling to survive the capitalist economy. This film paints a collective portrait of those who fight to protect their labour and the sacrifices they need to make along the way. Tuesday, April 2. Starts at 7:00 PM. Factory to the Workers is a documentary that portrays the struggle for survival of ITAS, the only factory in Croatia which was taken over and defended by its workers during postwar privatization. The author follows them day to day, vivisecting the concept of workers self-management in the time of market economy and giving a close look at industry on the EU periphery. Srđan Kovačević. We hung posters from the Visualizing Palestine project around the city, targeting progressive neighborhoods in an effort to counter Zionist propaganda in mainstream media and offer perspective on conditions under the occupation prior to October 7th. On Friday, several comrades gathered in the office to hand-print flyers for the Tenderloin Healing Circle that we’re starting this month. The Healing Circle is a project of the Mutual Aid Priority in collaboration with the Extreme Dean Priority to create a restorative justice space for community building with and for D5 constituents in the Tenderloin. We hand-carved the stamps and used recycled materials to make the flyers, and we had a great time!Please join #priority-mutual-aid to learn more about our work—this is a great time to plug in. Reading Group @ Tenant Organizing WG Meeting: The Rise and Fall of the Black Fillmore

Join the DSA SF Tenant Organizing Working Group meeting on Wednesday, March 27th from 7:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. at 1916 McAllister for a discussion of the article “‘Hush Puppies,’ Communalist Politics, and Demolition Governance: The Rise and Fall of the Black Fillmore” which discusses the history of community responses to re-development in the Western Addition. Redevelopment destroyed what had been called the “Harlem of the West”, displacing thousands of Black families in the service of real estate profits.

We will also discuss our ongoing work, including a proposal to revamp our Socialist Housing Organizing Project (SHOP) program to train socialists as tenant organizers; hear a report-back on our ongoing work with Tenant and Neighborhood Councils (TANC); and plan upcoming events the chapter can plug into. We’ll see you there!

Palestine Mass Meeting Reportback

This past Saturday, the Palestine Solidarity Working Group gathered nearly 50 members and non-members at our office for a mass organizing meeting. We reflected on the work we’ve done and the mass actions that have taken place so far, strategized ways that DSA SF can organize for Palestinian liberation in this critical moment, and discussed the role of socialists in the broader struggles against imperialism and colonialism around the world. We’ll be sharing a synthesis of these discussions with the membership soon.

Coming up next – join us Sunday, March 31st at 3:00 p.m. for our first Guerilla Ed for Palestine event! We’ll meet at the office to team up, then go hang posters around the city, and finally regroup at Zeitgeist to share experiences and hang out. You can RSVP here.

March Chapter Meeting Smolidarity 🐣

The Priority Mutual Aid Working Group is organizing childwatch at tomorrow’s chapter meeting! We’ll have socialist coloring books and plenty of crayons on hand. If you are planning to bring a child to the meeting or are interested in taking part in future smolidarity work, fill out this form below so we can get an accurate head count!

A digital DSA SF flyer with text over a photo of a crowd of Free Palestine protestors and their signs. The text reads, "Palestine Organizing Meeting, Saturday, March 16th, 3 p.m. - 6 p.m. DSA SF Office at 1916 McAllister Street. Come discuss the past few months of actions and strategize with us on what's next for us as socialists in the fight for Palestinian liberation."

Palestine Organizing Meeting

This Saturday (3/16) from 3 p.m.  to 6 p.m. at 1916 McAllister Street, come join DSA SF in reflecting on the past few months of actions and organizing against the ongoing genocide in Gaza, as we think about what’s next for us in the fight for Palestinian liberation. We will discuss our role as socialist allies in this struggle, and consider where to focus our efforts in the continued fight for a free Palestine, from the river to the sea. Food and drink will be provided and masks will be required.

SHOP Training Reportback

The Tenant Organizing Working Group completed our Socialist Housing Organizing Project (SHOP) training to give DSA SF members and interested tenant unionists the theoretical and practical knowledge to go out and organize our buildings as part of the struggle for the future we are fighting for. It was a success, with 12 people attending the trainings, and 7 people completing all three sessions.

We are now in the process of reorganizing the trainings to ensure they are more focused on organizing skills. The theoretical discussions and tenants’ rights trainings that had been part of SHOP will continue to be incorporated elsewhere into the work of the working group. Stay tuned, as we will be hosting more trainings in the future!
