DSA SF Rejects Gerrymandering in San Francisco

The San Francisco Democratic Socialists of America demand that the San Francisco Redistricting Task Force reject politically motivated gerrymandering. As socialists, we are committed to democracy, both as a means and an end. We are building a mass movement of working class people to take back power from big corporations and the 1%. Across the country, we have seen partisans draw lines that split constituencies in order to weaken our movement and reverse social progress.

This week, gerrymandering came to our city. The Redistricting Task Force has betrayed their responsibility to their constituents, by reversing a prior vote and sneaking in a new map at 3 a.m. that guts District 5 wholesale. Working class San Franciscans from across the city have spent precious hours waiting late into the night to demand fair maps and we agree with them: San Franciscans deserve better.

The motives behind this decision are crystal clear. A leaked email was released from a board member of Neighbors for A Better San Francisco, a dark-money PAC full of billionaire Mitch McConnell supporters that attacks homeless San Franciscans in racist, classist mailers, and has funded (by its own admission) 80% of the recall campaign against District Attorney Chesa Boudin. This board member, Nick Podell, made his name as a luxury gala-hopping developer fighting to steamroll tenant and anti-gentrification organizers in the Mission District. Emailing his fellow co-conspirators this Wednesday, Podell gloated, “After rocking, my next favorite activity right now is San Francisco politics… We are in the final week of the Redistricting process and it is going better than I could have ever dreamed.”

This isn’t just a threat. It is a confession.

Why are the billionaires so excited about the current redistricting proposal? Because it guts District 5. District 5 has shown again and again that a movement-based approach to politics, led by tenants and workers, can still defeat deep-pocketed corporate interests. A broad coalition of socialists and progressives won reforms to make San Francisco a home for all, including a universal right to eviction counsel, progressive taxes to fight homelessness & displacement (Prop C, Prop I), a new mandate for municipal social housing (Prop K), and the defeat of a naked power grab by the Police Officers’ Association to remove use of Tasers from public oversight (No on Prop H). It is not lost on us that our obstructionist mayor and her enablers have stood in the way of nearly all of these efforts.

Our coalition has also elected Dean Preston to the Board of Supervisors twice. Since the Mayor and her allies in San Francisco’s real estate and big business establishment have been unable to defeat Dean Preston and the policies we have fought for alongside him at the ballot box, they now want to draw his district – and our proven progress for the working people of this city – out of existence.

As we speak, the Mayor and her political allies are weaponizing the redistricting process to attack DSA member and D5 Supervisor Preston, while using the residents of the Tenderloin as political pawns. For twenty years, the residents of the Tenderloin and their neighbors in SoMa have worked together in District 6 and built political coalitions to represent their mutual interests. DSA SF stands with the Tenderloin community in choosing whatever district best uplifts their struggle, especially as the Mayor and her allies have proven once again in recent months that the Tenderloin is worth little more to them than an opportunity to score cheap political points at the expense of real material progress for the community.

The Redistricting Task Force has until April 14 to complete their work. At every meeting from now until then, DSA SF members will join community leaders from across San Francisco to demand truly democratic representation. The same truth is clear in North Carolina, Alabama, Seattle, Texas, San Francisco, or anywhere else: wherever the capitalist establishment undermines democracy in the service of their own power and profit, working class people suffer.

It’s not too late to give San Franciscans the representation that they deserve! Here’s how you can help:

  1. Show up at the next Redistricting Task Force Meeting on April 7 and demand that the San Francisco Redistricting Task Force reject politically motivated gerrymandering.
  2. Join DSA SF and our current Empty Homes Tax campaign to keep the political establishment quaking as we continue to build a better and more equitable San Francisco.

This is a pathetic attempt to rig city politics for the next decade, but we’re committed to winning  socialism in all of San Francisco, whether we begin in the Western Addition, the Tenderloin, or South of Market, in city hall or in the streets.

Progress on Our Collective Struggle to Fill Empty Homes

Comrades,

You voted last summer to make running a ballot measure slate a priority for the Chapter and we wanted to give you an update on how our first ballot measure is doing. The ballot measure is a tax to fill San Francisco’s 40,000 empty homes, and we’re explicitly running this campaign along class lines to maximize working-class consciousness and build a base of power through the electoral process.

We are well into the signature-gathering phase of the campaign and have collected an impressive amount, nearly 2,000 signatures of the required 14,000!

That’s 14% completed – amazing work for only one month!

Last Wednesday, we held an amazing fundraiser at the Make Out Room and raised nearly double what we were hoping to! It was an amazing experience to talk to all kinds of people – hardcore campaigners, new members, non-members – and see the shared excitement of a collective class project. It truly was inspiring and it won’t be the last time we’ll be doing one of these social events. But: campaigns are built on hard work and we can’t risk falling behind. Whether it’s signatures or fundraising, we’re going at max capacity, and we need to keep momentum up with our own labor.

This ballot measure belongs to you, the members of DSA SF. You should feel immense gratification of how far we have come, but you should also feel a positive anxiety to see it through to its successful completion. This ballot measure is an experiment in our dedication to building socialism. It is powered by the membership of this Chapter and it won’t succeed without us.

If you have the ability to volunteer to fulfill the promise we made to ourselves last summer, then please sign up for a shift HERE.

Solidarity always,
DSA SF Electoral Board

Learn More about Copaganda

Comrades,

In an effort to build a culture of appreciation and solidarity, we’re highlighting comrades and their contributions to the chapter. If you want to appreciate comrades, please email comms@dsasf.org to tell us a little about them 😊

The comrade we want to appreciate today is Melissa H, a current co-chair of the Black Liberation and Indigenous Sovereignty Priority Campaign and former Steering Committee member (’20-’21). But beyond even their deep commitment to this chapter, their day-job is building socialism in City Hall by acting as legislative aide for Supervisor Dean Preston. Melissa is a kind, empathetic and knowledgeable person who fights for socialism nearly every waking moment. Her deep dedication is matched with a truly caring perspective and those who know her can testify to her truly personal connection to the socialist movement and the people who power it.

“Melissa is a very rare and special kind of person. She is judicious and strategic in her selection of projects and pursuits, and manages use of time extremely well. Melissa has taken on a variety of leadership roles and has excelled at all of them, always mixing her keen vision, sense of fairness, and ability to make everyone feel seen and heard. Ever diplomatic, Melissa always expresses herself with grace when directing a project, managing to keep the atmosphere positive and constructive at every turn. She sets the bar high with her words and actions, and accordingly, others follow suit, matching her energy.

I have yet to meet anyone who is as exemplary a leader or who is as consistently high vibe as Melissa within DSA.”

Climate Crisis Action

Comrades,

Our current climate crisis is the creation of capitalism. The unceasing drive toward growth for the sake of profits above all else puts burdens on the planet that cannot be alleviated by patchwork solutions like reduced consumption on a personal level and a slow increase in the use of renewable energies, necessary as those changes are. The climate crisis demands comprehensive resistance to the system of capitalism, and the capitalists who plow their money into violence, destruction, and degradation.

This Friday, we encourage you to join Youth Vs Apocalypse as they join in on a global climate strike. Here in SF, we will march to ICE and BlackRock headquarters, demanding that ICE stop victimizing folks who bear the brunt of the climate crisis and demanding that BlackRock stop investing money in destruction of the planet and its people. More details on when and where to meet below – we also have discussion groups and documentary screenings coming up soon that you won’t want to miss!

Turnout on Tuesdays to Fill San Francisco’s Empty Homes

Comrades,

It’s going to take sustained energy to make the Empty Homes Tax a reality. We know real estate interests are going to spend a lot of money trying to stop this ballot measure – that’s why Turnout Tuesdays are starting up! Help the Empty Homes Tax campaign keep up the momentum and stay on track towards its 14,000 signature goal. From now through the summer, there will be phone banking every Tuesday evening from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. to make sure we hit our turnout and fundraising goals for this ballot measure. If you want to get started, come by the DSA SF office at 1916 McAllister St. on Tuesday evenings or join the Zoom call – either way, you’ll be helping make sure landlords and speculators pay up for the housing they’re keeping away from our neighbors.

Appreciate a Fellow Comrade Today!

In an effort to build a culture of appreciation and solidarity, we’re starting a monthly feature to highlight comrades and their contributions to the chapter. If you want to appreciate comrades, please email comms@dsasf.org to tell us a little about them!

This month, we’re featuring Chris T., an IFPTE member, former co-chair of the Labor Organizing Committee (LOC) and former Steering Committee member and VP of DSA SF (2020-2021). In their work in DSA, Chris has demonstrated effective and principled leadership, even in their rank & file role. We in Comms know Chris as someone who consistently guides us towards long-term and thoughtful planning, and that also goes for their work within the International Solidarity Organizing Committee (ISOC) and the CCC Community Team.

One comrade says of Chris:

“Chris is kind, thoughtful, highly detail-oriented, and incredibly generous with their time when collaborating with others. They often take on work overlooked by others in order to make sure the projects they’re involved in are successful, even if they don’t get credit for it. When Chris disagrees with someone or has a question about a proposal, they are able to politely articulate their perspective and consider possible ways to resolve conflicts with humility, nuance, and sincerity. They go above and beyond in demonstrating what it means to be a good comrade, both in word and deed.”

If you have the opportunity to connect with Chris either in organizing or via the #donuts-and-roses channel – which they are helping organize in their community building work – then you would be lucky to meet one of the Chapter’s most thoughtful and kind members!

Discussing Walter Rodney’s Groundings with My Brothers

Join Black Liberation and Indigenous Sovereignty and the Education Committee as we continue to discuss Walter Rodney’s Groundings with My BrothersThis Saturday, March 12 at 3:00 p.m. on Zoom, we will have a 1.5-hour free-form discussion of the last three chapters, chapters 3-6. You can register for the Zoom meeting here.

In this classic work published in the heady days of anti-colonial revolution, Groundings with My Brothers follows the global circulation of emancipatory ideas, from the black students of North America to the Rasta counterculture of Jamaica and beyond. The book is striking in its simultaneous ability to survey the wide and heterogeneous international context while remaining anchored in grassroots politics, as Rodney offers us first-hand accounts of mass movement organizing. Having inspired a generation of revolutionaries, this new edition will re-introduce the book to a new political landscape that it helped shape, with reflections from leading scholar-activists.

Empty Homes Tax Campaign Launched!

Comrades,
We want to thank the nearly 200 folks who joined us at our Empty Homes Tax ballot initiative kickoff! DSA SF’s Electoral Board helped develop the Empty Homes Tax and we as a chapter have committed to pushing this powerful measure past the finish line. The tax will make speculators and landlords pay for the vacant homes they hoard – denying stable housing to thousands of San Franciscans – and it will be because of our efforts.
And, that was just the kickoff! There’s lots more work to be done in the coming months to ensure victory at the polls this year – keep your eyes open for more opportunities to get involved, or sign up to join the campaign using the link here. When we show up together, we win!

This is also in partnership with the National BDS and Palestine Solidarity Working Group. Join Us to Discuss Walter Rodney’s Groundings with My Brothers

Join the Black Liberation and Indigenous Sovereignty chapter priority and the Education Committee for our first discussion on Walter Rodney’s Groundings with My Brothers on Saturday, February 26 at 3:00 p.m. on Zoom. In this classic work published in the heady days of anti-colonial revolution, Groundings with My Brothers follows the global circulation of emancipatory ideas, from the black students of North America to the Rasta counterculture of Jamaica and beyond. The book is striking in its ability to survey the wide and heterogeneous international context while remaining anchored in grassroots politics, as Rodney offers us first-hand accounts of mass movement organizing. Having inspired a generation of revolutionaries, this new edition will re-introduce the book to a new political landscape that it helped shape, with reflections from leading scholar-activists. You can find the direct link to the Zoom meeting here.

Connect With Your Fellow Comrades Today

Comrades,

“We’re all we’ve got” – words to live by, and a sentiment essential to socialism. Winning a world built around mutual compassion and support requires strong ties within our communities, and that starts within our own community here in DSA SF. This week, we’re launching a new Slack channel to help chapter members get some 1-on-1 time with each other – use it to chat or meet up with comrades to get to know the chapter better and learn how we can all better support each other. And, if you have the capacity, you can help the Electoral Board reach out to folks who haven’t been as active in the chapter lately – with election season ramping up, we’ll need every bit of support to get our ballot measures passed. More details on all that below, along with a few chapter events coming up in the next few weeks!

Watch DSA National’s webinar on the War in Yemen this Sunday

Saudi Arabia launched its offensive on Yemen with U.S. backing nearly seven years ago. Since then, hundreds of thousands of Yemenis have died, causing what is widely considered one of the worst humanitarian crises in the world. A year ago, President Biden announced that the U.S. would end all “offensive” support for the Saudi-led coalition in Yemen, effectively promising the U.S. would provide less material support for the war. Unfortunately, the U.S. continues to provide logistical support for airstrikes and sells billions of dollars in weapons to the Saudis. Join Shireen Al-Adeimi, Aisha Jumaan, and Erik Sperling for a discussion on the history of the US-backed Saudi offensive on Yemen, the current humanitarian crisis in the country, U.S. involvement under the Biden administration, and the steps we need to take to help bring this devastating war to an end. The discussion will take place on Zoom this Sunday, February 20 at 12:30 p.m. PT – RSVP here.

Organize a Healthcare Labor Circle with us!

Help us organize a healthcare labor circle! We are hoping to connect with members who work in healthcare in San Francisco. Our first step would be to organize an informal meet and greet among members to discuss where people work, what issues they face, and what a healthcare labor circle might look like. If you are interested in getting involved in this process please send an email to hansen.weaver@gmail.com.

Phone bank for tenants’ rights!

The Daybreak PAC is hosting weekly phone banks every Wednesday at 5:00 p.m. where we call District 5 tenants. It’s a great chance for DSA members to help protect tenants from eviction and assist folks in applying for rent relief!
